About My Challenge
I’m taking on this push-up challenge to raise funds and awareness for mental health — and it’s deeply personal.
In 2011, when I was just 18 years old, I lost a dear friend of mine, Marco, to suicide. His death shattered my world. Marco was the last person any of us would have expected to be struggling. He was my best mate’s older cousin — the one we all looked up to. He got a car before any of us did, joined the army, and always showed up when someone needed him. He was strong, reliable, and someone you felt safe around.
And yet, he was hurting in ways we couldn’t see.
I’m dedicating this challenge to Marco, and to all the others who should still be here with us today. Too many lives are lost to suicide, and too many people suffer in silence because reaching out still feels too hard, too heavy, or too stigmatised.
If there’s one thing I hope comes from this, it’s a reminder that it’s okay to reach out. It’s okay to ask for help. And no one should have to face their darkest moments alone.
The money raised through this challenge will go towards Mental Health New Zealand — helping fund resources, education, and care so that those most vulnerable can access the support they need, when they need it most.
Every push-up is for Marco.
