So here we are.
I have signed up to this push-up challenge to raise awareness of mental health in New Zealand. This may sound noble until one considers a small but critical detail: I am built like a Victorian lamppost. Tall, and with arms so long they appear to have been issued by mistake to someone else. Push-ups, for me, are less exercise and more an ongoing diplomatic incident with gravity.
And yet, here we are. Because mental health matters. It matters in the quiet, unseen ways. It matters behind brave smiles and casual “yeah, all good” replies. This challenge is not about physical prowess. It is about showing up, wobbling a bit, and doing it anyway, in public, so conversations can happen where silence once lived.
So I shall lower my improbably designed body to floor, rise again with the elegance of a startled giraffe, and repeat this ritual 2000 times, or until my body gives out, whichever come first.
Supporting Mental Health Foundation
Funds raised will invested by the Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand [The MHF] in three core areas of mahi:
- Promoting everyday actions that lift mental wellbeing
- Providing tools that support people through tough times
- Advocating for a better mental health system and society
With your tautoko/support, we can build a fairer, more connected Aotearoa where everyone’s mental health is valued and protected.
Whāia te hauora hinengaro kia puāwai ai te hauora tangata - there is no health without mental health.
