Why Now?

Kia ora Prajesh here.... and I’m doing 2,000 push-ups in 23 days from 5–27 February to raise awareness and funds for mental health because this kaupapa isn’t just important... it’s urgent.

For over 20 years, I’ve worked with young people across Aotearoa. I’ve laughed with them, stood in their corner through their struggles, and sadly, too many times, seen the devastating impact when they’ve felt like there was no other way out. I’ve heard their stories, I’ve sat with their whānau, and I know firsthand the heartbreak of losing rangatahi, brilliant, kind, struggling, to suicide.

Aotearoa/New Zealand has one of the highest youth suicide rates among wealthy countries, especially for rangatahi aged 15–19, with figures often nearly three times the average for high-income nations.

Many of our young people live with deep distress, depression and thoughts of suicide, far too many who shouldn’t have had to feel that alone.

This challenge, 2,000 push-ups, is my way of turning grief into action. It’s for the young people we have lost, for the ones still fighting, and for anyone who needs to be reminded that there is always another way.

There is hope. There is help. There is a future worth fighting for.

I’m asking for your support, not just for my push-ups, but for a stronger, more compassionate Aotearoa where mental health is treasured, protected and prioritised. All proceeds go to support the Mental Health Association of New Zealand in building a future where our rangatahi feel seen, supported and safe.

Please support me as I push for better mental health, for them, and for all of us.
